Cumberland Township Authority operates two wastewater treatment facilities, known as the North Plant and South Plant. Both plants use Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology along with ultraviolet (UV) disinfection to provide effective and reliable wastewater treatment.
SBR systems treat wastewater in a series of timed phases within the same basin. Incoming wastewater enters the tank and undergoes aeration, where air is introduced to support the growth of microorganisms that break down organic matter and nutrients. After aeration, the system enters a settling phase that allows solids to separate from the treated water. The clarified effluent is then carefully decanted, while the remaining solids are retained for further treatment.
Operators control each phase of the process to ensure optimal performance under varying flow and load conditions. This flexibility allows the plants to respond efficiently during periods of high flow or changing seasonal demands while maintaining consistent treatment quality.
Once biological treatment is complete, the effluent passes through a UV disinfection system. Ultraviolet light inactivates harmful bacteria and pathogens by disrupting their DNA, providing effective disinfection without the use of chemicals. This process helps protect local streams and groundwater while meeting state and federal environmental standards.
The North and South Plants work together to support the township’s wastewater system, protect public health, and preserve water quality.
